Helping you build a network

A first experimental digital tool that helps refugees connect with the right people and get the help they need to enter the jobmarket faster

Introducing the Hi app,

an early release designed for refugees

Having a network and being in control of your primary needs in your life are essential elements to be able to enter the job market. That is why the Hi app allows people to offer or get help on work, housing, finance, family, spare time and many more.

The Hi app is a free digital tool where everybody can share his or her experience and help each other.
In a first phase we launch and test the app only in the provinces of East Flanders and Antwerp.

More than work

Work is at the core of VDAB’s initiative, but because finding work is so much more than just meeting the right employer, the Hi app allows the users to help and get help on other topics. After all it’s easier to focus on finding a job when other issues such as finding a house or getting your children to school, have been addressed.

The Hi app is not a jobmatching platform as such, it works primarily on preparing people on all these domains and connecting them to the right people.

How you can be a part?

  • I’m a refugee

As a refugee you will be able to connect with new people in Belgium who can help find your way into this society in order to build a successful life. You can read tips & tricks provided by people on the platform and find interesting events.

If you attend an 'integration course' or 'inburgeringstraject' you can connect with companies registered on the platform. These employers can offer you an internship, help you prepare for a job in their sector or even help you find a job.

  • I’m a volunteer

You always wanted to offer some help to the asylum seekers that arrived here in Belgium but you don't know how to find them?

As a volunteer you can connect with asylum seekers and refugees that have asked for help on one or more of the domains you can help them with. Helping out can be big or small. It can vary from going for a walk or preparing a dinner, to helping finding a house, practising Dutch,... to helping to write a CV and application letter, looking for jobs on Dutch websites or preparing for that job interview.

  • I’m a social organisation

You are a social organisation with interesting projects or services for asylum seekers and refugees?

Reach out to your target group in an easy and digital way to spread news about your projects, opportunities, opening hours & contact information, share success stories and so much more.

  • I’m a company

As an employer you can connect with asylum seekers and refugees that are attending an 'integration course' or 'inburgeringstraject'.

These people have already acquired the necessary papers to work in Belgium or can easily aquire them. You can offer them support by providing an internship, by screening their CV, by explaining what knowledge is necessary to work in your sector,... You just might find that motivated employee you are looking for for such a long time already.

An initiative by VDAB

In July 2015 the number of refugees crossing European borders was estimated around 500.000. All of them are trying to find a place where they can reboot and start a new life. It is not easy to know where to go for advice, which courses to take or how to seek and apply for jobs. As a result, it takes them a very long time to enter the job market.

This is why we are building the first Hi app for refugees, a digital experiment connecting refugees with the right people helping them enter the job market faster.

Hi is an innovation track by VDAB. Our mission is to learn how we can have a better and more positive impact on job market integration. If you have any questions or want to share your thoughts, drop us a line at hiapp@vdab.be.

We try out this way of working in the provinces of Antwerp and East Flanders first. After we will gradually expand to the rest of Flanders.
